Font Design Volkswagen Infotainment

Digital typography – exactly on the pixel

Cogneus Design creates and develops the font family Infotainment for the Volkswagen AG since 2005. For the next generation of infotainment platform MIB and MQB, the character set and the presentation on the navigation system has been completely redesigned.

The claim for picture quality increases by using high-resolution displays. The main focus on redesign was on higher readability through more open and more homogenere character shapes as well as an improved kerning of the fonts.

90 percent of the user interface is typography

The standalone font family Infotainment is used in three sections – light, regular and semibold – on the instrument cluster in the cockpit of Volkswagen vehicles such as Golf, Passat, Tiguan, Touareg or Phaeton. Highest ergonomics is standard on all vehicles of the Volkswagen Group. Thus the fonts significantly contributes to the user experience and are part of the branding of the Vokswagen user interface design.

Driver assistance means: values, warnings and words

Vehicle information such as fuel consumption, navigation or communications are reproduced in the central display between the round instruments. As well, all the infotainment units are equipped with the fonts. Depending on the equipment line, the Radio-Navigation-Systems (RNS) are delivered with different screen sizes and screen resolutions. Driver assistance systems are operated via the central touch screen.

Worldwide standard of the Volkswagen fleet

All vehicles that are shipped around the world, goes to the writings of Cogneus! The fonts are combined, in co-operation with the world’s largest font manufacturer Monotype, with characters for Chinese, Japanese and Korean for the Asian market.
